The Department of African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures currently offers six Minor programs:

Languages and Literatures (013)

The Minor program in African, Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Literatures consists of 18-20 credits, which must be completed with a grade of C or better in each course.

Requirements

  • Two (2) courses beyond the elementary (100) level in one of the languages offered by the department;
  • 01:013:201 Crossroads: Classical Literatures of Africa, the Middle East and South Asia
  • One (1) of the following three courses, as appropriate to one’s language of study:
    • 01:013:211 Introduction to the Literatures of Africa or
    • 01:013:221 Introduction to the Literatures of the Middle East or
    • 01:013:231 Introduction to the Literatures of South Asia
  • Six (6) elective credits of additional literature, sociolinguistics or linguistics courses at the 300 level or above, offered through AMESALL, by cross-listing through other departments, or with the approval of the Department chair.  

Learning Objectives

The objective of the Minor program in African, Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Literatures is to provide familiarity with a cross-section of the classical literatures of Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, and a broad understanding of the modern literatures of one of the three regions.  Minors will also develop listening, speaking, writing and reading skills in one of the languages of their chosen region of study (Africa, the Middle East, or South Asia) at a proficiency level of Intermediate-Low or higher, based on the guidelines of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

 

Arabic (074)

The Minor program in Arabic consists of 20 credits, which must be completed with a grade of C or better in each course.

Requirements

The minor in Arabic consists of four courses in Arabic language beyond the elementary level plus two additional courses, 01:013:201 “Crossroads: Classical Literatures of Africa and Asia” and 01:013:221 “Introduction to the Literatures of the Middle East.”

Learning Objectives

The objective of the Minor is to develop listening, speaking, writing and reading skills in Modern Standard Arabic to the Intermediate High level, as based on the guidelines of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). 


 

Hindi (505)

The Minor program in Hindi consists of 20 credits, which must be completed with a grade of C or better in each course.

Requirements

The minor in Hindi consists of four courses in Hindi language beyond the elementary level plus two additional courses, 01:013:201 “Crossroads: Classical Literatures of Africa and Asia” and 01:013:231 “Introduction to the Literatures of South Asia.”

The objective of the Minor is to develop listening, speaking, writing and reading skills in Hindi to the Intermediate High level, as based on the guidelines of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).


 

African Languages (013A)

The Minor in African languages consists of 20-22 credits hours which must be completed with a minimum grade of C. 

Requirements

Minors must take 4 courses in one African language (Akan/Twi, Arabic, Swahili, or Yoruba) (14-16 credits). They must also take EITHER:

  1. Two 300 level courses in the language (6 credits), OR
  2. 013:201: Crossroads: Classical Literatures of Africa, the Middle East and South Asia (3 credits) and either 01:312 African Myth and Folklore (3 credits) or 013:211 Introduction to the Literatures of Africa (3 credits)

The objective of the Minor is to develop listening, speaking, writing and reading skills in an African language to the Intermediate Mid level, as based on the guidelines of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).


 

Persian

The Minor in Persian consists of 20-22 credits hours which must be completed with a minimum grade of C.

Requirements

Minors must take 4 Persian language courses (14-16 credits). They must also take EITHER

  1. Two 300 level Persian language courses (6 credits), OR
  2. 013:201: Crossroads: Classical Literatures of Africa, the Middle East and South Asia (3 credits), and either 013:203 Language and Society (3 credits), or 013:221 Introduction to the Literatures of the Middle East (3 credits)

The objective of the Minor is to develop listening, speaking, writing and reading skills in Persian language to the Intermediate Mid level, as based on the guidelines of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).


 

Turkish

The Minor in Turkish consists of 20-22 credits hours which must be completed with a minimum grade of C.

Requirements

Minors must take 4 Turkish language courses (14-16 credits). They must also take EITHER

  1. Two 300 level Turkish language (6 credits), OR
  2. 013:201: Crossroads: Classical Literatures of Africa, the Middle East and South Asia (3 credits), and either 013:203 Language and Society (3 credits), or 013:221 Introduction to the Literatures of the Middle East (3 credits)

The objective of the Minor is to develop listening, speaking, writing and reading skills in Turkish language to the Intermediate Mid level, as based on the guidelines of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
