Dr. Borjian is Associate Teaching Professor of Sociolinguistics and Coordinator of African, Middle Eastern and South Asian Language Programs at the Department of African, Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Literatures at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.
Her research focuses on the politics, economics and sociology of language in the contexts of Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. She is best known for writing English in Post-Revolutionary Iran: From Indigenization to Internationalization (Multilingual Matters, 2013), a pioneering book on the history and status of the English language in Iran and the way it interacts with the country’s policies and political economy. The book currently severs as a reference book on the topic. Her second book, Language and Globalization: An Autoethnographic Approach (Routledge, 2017), in an edited volume that examines the linguistic and socio-cultural aspects of globalization with an autoethnographic lens. She is also the co-editor of Middle Eastern Languages in Diasporic USA Communities a special issue for the International Journal of the Sociology of Language, 237 (2016, Berlin: Mouton de Gruyter). Currently, she is working on a book project tentatively titled Re-Imagining Multilingualism in the Global Age for Multilingual Matters.
Dr. Borjian served in the National Fulbright Committee, Committee for English Language Teaching Assistantships in Near East/North Africa, sat on the executive board of the American Association of Teachers of Persian, been invited as a guest speaker in notable universities and institutions and served as a guest reviewer in many peer-reviewed academic journals with a focus on Sociolinguistics, Educational Linguistics, Multilingualism and Language Policy and Planning.
As an educator and scholar, she is an optimist who firmly believes that the world can be a better place through multilingualism, linguistic pluralism, inclusion and diversity, which are the central themes of her research and teaching.
