Talk Title:  "The Reconciliation Romance: Who Gets Left Out of the National Family?"

Talk Abstract: Across global post-conflict literatures, the story of national reconciliation is often narrated through a romance plot. The nation symbolically restores as former antagonists unite in romantic love. But at the same time as the reconciliation romance matchmakes between former foes, it excludes those deemed undesirable to the new body politic. Through a comparative reading of the American Reconstruction drama Alabama! and the contemporary Kenyan novel Dust, this talk articulates a global pattern of the reconciliation romance as indicting society’s unwillingness to embrace all parties into the national family.
