Areas of Teaching/Research

Hindi Language and Literature; Second Language Acquisition; Applied Linguistics; Translation and Literary Theory; Comparative Linguistics; Postcolonial Theory; Empire Studies; South Asian Literatures and Cultures; Islamic Cultures in South Asia.

My areas of interest also include convergence and code mixing in North-Indian languages, educational policy and politics of language in India. I am currently researching the relationship between the formation of Hindi as a national language and early colonial philology. This project aims to enhance the current understanding of the complex relationship between orientalist philology, colonial education and nationalist literature in India. Based on my teaching experience in Hindi language and literature, I am also developing an effective pedagogical strategy and an updated curriculum for heritage language learners in North America.

My scholarly curiosity ranges widely, from minor literary traditions in postcolonial locations to revisionist readings of canonical English texts. I have also written on topics related to gender, performance and religion. At present, I am in the process of preparing a book manuscript based on my doctoral research which investigates the discursive role of Mughal constitutionality in defining the contours of some key ideas of Enlightenment thought such as universal sovereignty and vigilant citizenry in Britain, while simultaneously legitimizing mechanisms of colonial control in an overseas empire.
